Paterson's characters are probably projections of her. She also was a misfit much of her early life. Several years ago, she was the keynote speaker at some conference I attended and I was taken aback by how self deprecating she was-- to the point that I found it annoying. Last year she spoke at the Marquette University children's literature conference about the Hans Christian Anderson Award (I think that was the one) which she had just received and she was delightful. She talked about being a child in China and how out of place she felt and when she moved to the United States, it really was not much better, as I recall. She probably well understands the many children who feel just as she felt. Michele Missner
