This Tomi Ungerer discussion is fascinating. I grew up loving Crictor and the Three Robbers and never dreamed there might be any more to the stories than clever snakes and cool weapons (I still love to say "blunderbuss" out loud). It made perfect sense to me that the robbers' towers should be rounded, but only because they matched their neat robber hats. I wonder how all the symbols and hidden details work on the child's experience of his books. Do they make the books more powerful to children, or just to adults?
