Kathleen, I read the book with the impression that Steve was a semi-reliable narrator who was trying to present his best side, but that reading between the lines, he WAS the lookout, but had performed as such without considering the consequences, and when they occurred, was devastated. I found the "book-as-shooting-script" very effective--I would hope teens would as well.
