I think it is also important to feed facts as a means of opening discussion of important horrific or historic events. Even the very young can benefit. The Lily Cupboard for example is a good way to introduce the horrror of the Holocaust to young children, it can open a discussion of tolerance, bravery of the families that hid the children, differences and similarities in religion there is so much to be discussed. Even David Adler's picture biographies are a great way of introducing important history, people like Martin Luther King Jr. who died in not such a pleasant way or for not such a pleasant reason. Not all history is pleasant, but all is important and its been proven the younger a child learns something the more they retain. Also there is so much that can be emphasized, not only the horror, that children can work into the way they live their lives, like acceptance of other people. How soon do most people introduce their children to the teachings of the Church? Not all that surrounded Christ was pleasant.
