1) "Celebrate the Elizabeth Burr Room" on Sunday afternoon, June 13, 1:30 (reception) and 2:00-3:00 (program) at the CCBC on the occasion of the formal naming of the CCBC Conference Room after the late Elizabeth Burr. Betty Burr was one of the founders of the CCBC, its first librarian, one of the founders of the Friends of the CCBC, and its first president. All Friends members will receive an invitation, but anyone interested is welcome to come to this special event.
2) The registration brochures for "Points of View in Literature for Children and Young Adults" are now available. This IBBY Regional Conference, sponsored by the U.S. Board on Books for Young People
(USBBY) and hosted by the CCBC, will take place on October 8-9, 1999, in Madison, Wisconsin. Further details about the conference can be found at http://www.education.wisc.edu/ccbc/usbby.htm All interested persons are welcome to register and attend. Patron members of USBBY are the American Library Association, the Children's Book Council, the International Reading Council, and the National Council of Teachers of English.
3) You are welcome to come to the CCBC to participate in the next book discussion to be held on Friday afternoon, June 18, 3:30-5:30pm. These discussions are open to anyone interested. Books can be read at the CCBC or obtained otherwise. You will find a copy of the discussion list on the CCBC webpage (http://www.education.wisc.edu/up4disc.htm)
4) You are invited to come to the University of Wisconsin - Madison campus during June 7 for a week of exploration, "In Search of Southeast Asia: Teaching into the 21st Century." This is the theme of a workshop for K teachers and school library media specialists sponsored by the Center for Southeast Asian Studies. Participants will learn about Southeast Asis from a multidisciplinary and curriculum-reform perspective. There will be ample time to develop plans for local curriculum. Participants will exmaine new ways of incorporating history and culture and of making links between the home country and new U.S. citizens from Southeast Asian nations. Campus lodging and four dinners are included in the very low tuition fee. Inquire about graduate credit or DPI clock hours. 5) Please plan to attend the second annual Charlotte Zolotow Lecture on Thursday evening, October 7, 1999, at University Theater in the Memorial Union on the UW-Madison campus. Author Katherine Paterson will deliver the lecture. Her many books for children include Bridge to Terabithia (Crowell, 1977), and Jacob Have I Loved (Crowell, 1980), both Newbery Award winners; The Great Gilly Hopkins (Crowell, 1978), a Newbery Honor Book; Jip: His Story (Lodestar, 1996); and Parzival: The Quest of the Grail Knight (Lodestar, 1998). Ms. Paterson was the 1998 recipient of the International Board on Books for Young People's Hans Christian Anderson Award for her contributions to children's literature. This annual lecture is in honor of Charlotte Zolotow, a distinguished children's book editor for 38 years and the author of more than 65 picture books. Ms. Zolotow attended the University of Wisconsin from 1933 to 1936. Prior to the lecture, the Charlotte Zolotow Award for outstanding writing in a picture book will be awarded to Uri Shulevitz for Snow (Farrar).
