I used to facilitate an adult reading group where we read children's novels and in my experience anything that was well written with well developed characters did well. So some of the titles that generated a lot of enthusiasm and discusssion were: Walk Two Moons, Catherine Called Birdy, Hatchet and The Mummy Market, only the Mummy Market falls into the fantasy genre. But all have emotionally moving stories with characters that really live and breathe.

Right now I'm about half way through Diana Wynne Jones Charmed Life and I am not gripped the way I was with Harry from the very first page. I can sense the mystery but don't feel I'm living it the way I was with Harry.
