Kathleen mentioned the Weetzie Bat books, and I thought I remembered reading that Francesca Lia Block originally wrote them for adults. Although they are about high school kids, I wonder if she changed it for the publisher or if it was intended to have the same appeal to adults as TV shows about teens like Buffy the Vampire Slayer. For me, the emotions of love lost and found are the strongest part of her books that anyone who has been in love, both teens and adults, in both same sex and opposite sex relationsips can relate to.
