For the past two semesters, I have assigned *The GIver* to the required master's level class on Management of Information Organizations that I teach here in the School of Information Studies at Florida State. It is a part of our discussion of information policy and the impact of limited access to information.
The first time I assigned it, one student e-mailed me and asked if he had made a mistake, saying the only book he could find by that title was a young adult novel. Many students (after completing the assignment) have expressed their interest in and gratitude for reading it.

I think we have teachers to thank to a great extent for The Giver crossing over. I have often heard of teachers assigning it to classes and suggesting that parents and children read it together.
