Recently it was asked if Watership Down is still being read by kids. It was passed around my daughter's group of friends a year or two ago, while they were in 7th grade. This year I work in 2 middle school libraries which both have very worn paperback copies of it available, although I haven't myself seen anyone check it out. My daughter's reader-friends like every kind of book, but the less compulsive readers among them prefer fantasy. WD was part of that period, when they all were reading Redwall books. My daughter begged me to listen to her read one of the Redwalls aloud (I often put ^ her ^ in this position), but I couldn't stand it, other than gaining a nice familiarity with voles. I had remembered WD as terribly sad, but her group loved it. Judy Schachter
