In response to Susan Bloom's comment, perhaps everyone seriously involved with children's books knows who Diana Wynne Jones is, but I don't think many teachers, parents or even voracious child/teen readers know her books, which is so disappointing. Her writing is far better than that in many fantasy novels we offer children. Harry Potter, for example, is enjoyable but I found it marred by the Roald?hl-cliche about the nice orphan in the nasty family with the spoiled son (the same set-up also appeared recently in The Secret of Platform 13) .
Diana Wynne Jones, by contrast, is original and inventive, with wonderfully complex plots and subtle humor. Archer's Goon, Howl's Moving Castle, Castle in the Air, Dark Lords of Derkholm (her latest), and many of the others are, I think, brilliant. (Not a word I use very often.)
