The discussion of horrors in history and whether or not they belong in children's books is interesting, especially in the context of discussion of the Carlisle Indian School and abuse that happened there. Horrible abuse occurred at Carlisle, but some suggest that it is inappropriate for children to read about children being beaten at Carlisle.

When I juxtapose that piece of history with the horrors of slavery, I wonder if there aren't two standards at work - are we, as a society, more willing to look at the grim truths about slavery, but not the grim truths about abuse in Native boarding schools? I don't mean to take the list off topic, but this did strike me as an interesting parallel, and I thought I'd toss it out to all of you as a point to consider.
