Open discussion

Thanks, Ruth! It's always nice to hear from you, and I certainly see your point about letting the discussion go on to Harry Potter (which we had planned for discussion beginning next Tuesday). We'd be willing to let it go on, for the reasons you suggested, but whenever things get off-topic, we hear from people individually and privately who ask us to please get things back on track. Over and over again, we hear from CCBC-Net participants that they like the focussed discussion on CCBC-Net, as opposed to other listservs that offer a more open approach to discussion. We have also had this reinforced consistently by our External Advisory Board which meets twice a year to give us feedback on all of our services, including CCBC-Net. People who don't like the focussed approach generally switch to a listserv that better meets their needs and expectations.

Since the topics on CCBC-Net are announced months in advance, we feel an obligation to meet the expectations of the many people who have looked forward to and prepared for a discussion by reading in advance.

We always welcome your comments and constructive criticism about CCBC-Net, such as Ruth has offered, as we are all in the process of learning how to discuss books via an electronic medium. Please feel free to contact either me (horning at ccbc.education.wisc.edu) or my colleagues Ginny Moore Kruse (gmkruse at ccbc.education.wisc.edu) and Megan Schliesman (schleisman at ccbc.education.wisc.edu) directly with any comments you may have about how we might make CCBC-Net more user-friendly.

When I was a young teacher, I learned something which continued to be important to me throughout my career as a teacher, pre-school-post-graduate university students, and as a librarian: to snuff out an incipient and active discussion because my program plans dictated a different topic was killer to the energy of the discussion that was taking place, e.g.,
"Not today children"--or whomsoever. So--your plan book say Shirley Hughes but folk are involved with Jones and Rowling.

Good pedagogy says,--go with Jones and Rowling and maybe in a week or two Hughes, et alii can return.

Yes? No?
