Re: the Tillermans
Someone gave me this book to read just after my mother died, mostly to give me something to do, I think, but I was pulled right in and was able to channel some of my grief into the novel. The writing style is good (easy to read), and the characters are very real. I didn't always like the characters (stubbornness is not a quality I admire) or approve of things they were doing, but I could always understand their motivation and believe that their feelings were appropriate for them. I suppose, too, that the terror of Dicey's situation held my interest; since these children seemed real to me, I was concerned about their fate.
I really liked Solitary Blue, about Jeff. That story really stayed with me, and I wanted to do something nasty to that mother of his.
But they were all moving, breathing, feeling people to me. Anyone agree?
