Good morning all Myself and eight other women worked diligently over several weeks, pooling our knowledge about Carlisle Indian School. We have written a lengthy, detailed review of the book that can be read at the Oyate website
 .

The book is part of the Dear America series published by Scholastic. It is set in 1890, and purports to tell the story of a Sioux girl who goes to Carlisle. Unfortunately, disappointingly, outrageously.... The book is full of errors and culturally insensitive in many, many, ways.

Please visit the web site and read the review. It is far too long to post here. It contains information about boarding schools, personal names in Native culture, inside/outside authorship of books about Native Americans, and stereotyping that is found throughout the book. It also includes extensive quotes from survivors of the boarding schools, and a quote from a government agent and how he made sure parents would send their children to the schools.
