SUE, Thank you kindly for posting the winners of the Golden Kite Awards. Since this is such a prestigeous honor, coming from writers' and illustrators' peers, I am always thrilled to see whom THEY consider meritorious. And tickled, especially, this year to see Paul Fleischman's Whirligig awarded as Honor Book to Bauer's Rules of the Road as 1st place winner. When selecting authors for a content analysis in my dissertation, I chose the entire works of Lowry, Paterson, Cleary, Byars, and MacLachlan. One fellow on my doctoral committee told me I'd have to choose a male to add to the writers' group, and I quickly added Paul Fleischman. That was in 1983, before he began to come to prominence with poetry for two voices and more recent writing. Thus, I'm always in the corner cheering on awards to Paul, an often overlooked, though deserving, writer for youth. A wonderful, wonderful list this time. Thank you for such good news!

Sincerely, Dr. Gwendolyn Davis International Literacy Specialist Durham, North Carolina and Amsterdam, the Netherlands
