I know Constance C. Greene was not on the initial list proposed by Megan, but does anyone remember Al? I recall reading "A Girl Called Al" when I was in the 4th grade and finding my first literary friend. The chubby girl with glasses and an independent nature has remained in my thoughts for many years.
