This month we are focusing our attention on sequels and literary series, including novels and novellas by Mildred Taylor, the Tillerman sequence by Cynthia Voigt, the Titch picture books by Pat Hutchins, the Martha picture books by Susan meddaught, the Alfie &n Trotter Street picture books by Shirley Hughes, and Gary Paulsen's Hatchet and his subsequent novels about Brian.
We will begin with the books of Mildred Taylor, starting with Song of Trees and Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry. Look again at these books and other in the Logan family saga. Think about the impact that the individual books and the series as a whole have had, not only on child readers, but on literature for children and young adults. Have the ways in which Mildred Taylor explored--and continues to explore--this story of family and history expanded your sense of the possibilities of series or sequel publishing? What has been gained by continuing the story over the course of numerous novels, and moving back in time to explore life of the previous generation in a book like The Well, in which Taylor writes about Cassie Logan's father as a child? What is your experience of using these books with young readers?
