Sigh--I love CCBC-Net but am often frustrated because many of the books discussed at awards times are ones that my library has ordered, but hasn't received yet. When titles win the awards, this seems to delay further the time it takes us to receive them.
Because my town has no children's book store, no megastore, and I am hesitant to develop an amazon.com habit, I often save the messages for a particular discussion until I can read the book (usually a month to several months later). I enjoy the discussions much more when I have had the opportunity to read the book first. This is the case with SECRET LETTERS 0 TO 10, which we just received a few days ago. I read the book in one sitting and loved its slightly retro and at the same time fresh style! I read the CCBC messages, which I had saved, and was especially happy to read the author's letter to her cousin. HOWEVER, I am truly frustrated because I am off-topic if I discuss the book itself on the list now.
I know that we all share a zeal to be up-to?te and with this gift of electronic chatting at our disposal, it would be more than retro to suggest that the list should postpone the discussion of the January award-winners a few months, but would I be out-of-line in suggesting that maybe the Batchelder winners, at least, could be discussed in May in the future? I realize also that my situation is particular, but since I found in my saved messages no actual discussion of SECRET LETTERS from the e-listers themselves and that Ginny had to provide a summary of the book in order for her and the editor's postings to have a context, I hope that that my suggestion will be considered.
From the response around me in Philadelphia, I am willing to bet that the Batchelder winner and honor books are among the least known of the award-winners. If people had a longer opportunity to obtain and read these books, might we not have a larger discussion of these important books?
Ah well, the result of my frustration will be that I will just have to develop a core of readers for SECRET LETTERS here, so that we can discuss the book in person. Maybe that's not so bad, after all- Sue Sherif
