Just a quick note to recommend Sid Fleischman's The Abracadabra Kid as a memoir that sheds light on how the writer became a writer. I am reading this aloud to my twelve-year-old son. It makes a fine read-aloud, as do all of Sid Fleischman's books. It is his story from early days as a magician through World War II to the present. Each chapter has a heading, usually humorous, such as the one from a student after an author visit: "Please don't come back to my school. I hate to write letters."
By the end of the book, we get lots of advice on writing and behind- the-scenes looks at Sid and Paul Fleischman's lives as writers and as father and son.
