Dear Fran,
We always had a good laugh over the picture of the rat in the meat grinder. The father cat worked in a rat processing plant. (There was also a cat named Nurse Clot) We spent hours in a college children's writing class going over Tommy Ungerer's illustrations. His characters are always giving off some bodily fluid or have an Ax handle stuck in their head.
My favorite illustration in No Kiss was a cat dressed like Winston Churchil wearing a Nazi Symbol on his arm. His books really are too subversive for kids. I've always enjoyed his daring though. If you have any more information or stories about him please tell me. :)
