Peter Gay's memoir "My German Question", about his childhood in Nazi Berlin, is written for adults, but is a wonderful addition to the literature about children. He, too, came from an atheist Jewish family. His professional interest in psychoanalysis puts a fascinating slant on how he as a child coped with constant humiliation and danger. He also discusses the criticism he and his family faced in Germany and later in the U.S. for not being
"Jewish enough."
