i read anita lobel's No Pretty Pictures, and was awed by its raw power. but i'm a little troubled by the repeated references to "political correctness" or lack thereof. that lobel describes a tense/antagonistic relationship to being jewish - well, that's her experience. it's not mine, and when i catch my breath at some of her thoughts and feelings, i don't condemn or praise them. they are what they are. i worry when the pc phrase gets tossed around, for more than enlightening, it seems a backhanded form of censorship. if there are those hurt or distressed by lobel's lack of obvious jewish identity, they are as entitled to their feelings as those who feel liberated because they too either came from assimilated backgrounds or have moved there in their adult lives. what's enriching to me about lobel and the others is that small lights have been turned on, revealing other lives. ellen levine ellenl at sprintmail.com
