I love being reminded of Bill Peet's autobiography as well many others that I have looked at but not yet thoroughly read.

I did read recently Tomie dePaola's new autobiography 26 Fairmount Avenue. A few reasons I'd recommend this book to fans of Tomie's work.

First, it is written for children. Classic dePaola illustration. Not difficult writing (even plausible for a newly independent reader). Nice large text. And not too long (56 pages). And short, concise chapters.

Second, the book gives insights into some of his stories. For those that do dePaola author studies, this would be a nice addition. Nana Upstairs, Nana Downstairs, for example, is retold in the narrative.

Lastly, it fits my appreciation of teaching children about the childhoods of adults they might know. 26 Fairmount Avenue gives insight into the life of young Tomie because we see what he is going through as a boy -- moving, finding new friends, unpacking, coping with family changes, and so forth.

It is refreshing to add to this fine list of biographies another one written for younger children.
