Michelle Woods delighted 1st and 2nd graders in my school as we looked together at "I See the Rhythm." They noted the repetition of the slave ship from the center of the first picture in the book as it reappeared in the background of the last picture, which I hadn't seen; they looked at faces and some felt they were realistic, even though they "had paint on them." As I read the text they loved singing bits of the songs, and they liked the gospel picture very much for the colors. We did a bit of looking for Missy, and many wanted to take the book home to look some more. I was worried that after a unit on Jerry Pinkney as illustrator, these pictures wouldn't be as accessible, but I was happy to be wrong.
