1) The Friends of the CCBC will hold their annual "CCBC Choices" Publication Day events on Saturday, March 6, on the fourth floor of Helen C. White Hall, corner Observatory Drive & N. Park St., UW-Madison campus. These events include two speeches jointly presented by the CCBC librarians in which they will comment on publishing trends, evaluation observations, and some of the books selected for
"CCBC Choices 1998." A luncheon precedes the Friends' Annual Meeting, and the day will begin with a used booksale. Information has been mailed to all Friends' members, but it's possible to obtain membership at the door that day for all events except the luncheon. Questions? 2) Meet and hear Francisco X. Alarcon read poetry on Saturday, March 6, 8:00 p.m., at the Woodland Pattern Book Center Center, 720 E. Locust, Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Admission: $5.00 advance and members &
$6.00 at door or non-members. Questions? Phone 414&3P01. Mr. Alarcon's two books for children, "Laughing Tomatoes" and "From the Bellybutton of the Moon" (both published by Children's Book Press) represent one portion of his published works.

Meet and hear Kathleen Horning, Ginny Moore Kruse and Megan Schliesman at the Headwaters Reading Council (March 9) and the annual Children's Book Fest co-sponsored by Wisconsin Valley Library Service, Indianhead Federated Library System & Northern Waters Library Service with the Rhinelander School District and the Rhinelander District Library (March 10) - both in Rhinelander, Wisconsin; and at the Winding Rivers Library System & CESA #4 workshop in West Salem, Wisconsin (March 11).

Ginny will be at the Madison Area Reading Council (March 18); the Outagamie Waupaca Library System in Waupaca, Wisconsin, (March 24); and the professional development day of the Eau Claire Area School District & Indianhead Library System in Eau Claire, Wisconsin (April 14).

Megan and Ginny will be at the Wisconsin Educational Media Association in Appleton (April 21 & 22). And that's not all, Katy will be speak at a continuing education session in Providence, Rhode Island (March 22); and Ginny will teach a course for the METS Suburban Library System in Burr Ridge, Illinois (April 20).

4) Continuing through March 17: An exhibit for families and all interested persons "Words and Images: The Narrative Works of the Pinkneys" at the new Helen Jeffris Wood Museum Center, 426 N. Jackson St., in Janesville, Wisconsin. The exhibit features original art for children's books by Jerry Pinkney, Brian Pinkney, and Myles Pinkney as well as examples of manuscripts written by Gloria Jean Pinkney and Andrea Davis Pinkney. The museum is operated by the Rock County Historical Society and is open daily between 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. Admission: Preschool - Free; Grades K through 12 - $2.50; Adults $3.50; Seniors -

5) Outstanding new Latino Literature for children and young adults will be discussed during the annual CCBC Americas Award discussion on Tuesday, March 16, 5:10 - 9:10 p.m. in the CCBC. The discussion list is posted on the CCBC website
(www.soemadison.wisc.edu/ccbc/).
 This annual discussion is co-sponsored by the CCBC with the Madison Metropolitan School District. All interested adults are invited to participate by reading most if not all of the books on the reading list in advance. The discussion books are on reserve in the CCBC and may be borrowed on an overnight basis. Pre-registration is necessary. No fee for anyone registering through the CCBC. (Metered parking is available in the parking garages underneath Helen C. White Hall. The lower parking level is recommended, because the meters there last several hours, while the meters on the ground level parking last only two hours.)

6) Award-winning artist & filmmaker Peter Sis will present a free, public lecture, "Drawn to America: Imagination, Culture & Artistic Freedom" on Monday, March 22, at 7:00 p.m., in L160, Elvehjem Museum of Art, UW-Madison campus (800 University Ave.).

Mr. Sis created the 1999 Caldecott Honor Book "Tibet: Through the Red Box," (Farrar, Straus, Giroux, 1998) which has been acclaimed for children and adults alike. His wide-ranging career as an artist and filmmaker includes artwork appearing regularly in the New York Times. His many books for children include "Starry Messenger," also published by Farrar; "Three Golden Keys," edited by Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis and published by Doubleday; and many books published by Greenwillow, including "Fire Truck."

The CCBC is a co-sponsor of this lecture which is presented by the International Institute at UW-Madison. Other UW-Madison co-sponsors include the Creative Writing Program of the English Dept.; the Art Department.; the Center for South Asia; the Center for Russia, East Europe and Central Asia; the Global Cultures Program; and the Friends of the CCBC. 7) Artist Carmen Lomas Garza will present a free, public lecture on Thursday, March 25, at 5:30 p.m., in L160, Elvehjem Museum of Art, 800 University Ave., University of Wisconsin - Madison.

Ms. Lomas Garza will be on campus as part of an artist in residence program at Tandem Press, Art Dept., School of Education, UW-Madison. Her distinguished career includes the creation of books for children, including two collections of paintings about her Mexican American childhood in Texas: "Family Pictures = Cuadros de familia" and "In My Family = En mi familia," both published by Children's Book Press.

8) Author/Storyteller Joseph Bruchac will present a free, public lecture on Friday, April 9, 7:30p.m., in the Great Hall of Wisconsin Memorial Union, on the University of Wisconsin - Madison campus. This lecture is sponsored by the School of Library and Information Studies, University of Wisconsin - Madison, and is part of the SLIS conference

9) Save these dates, October 7-9, 1999, to come to Madison, Wisconsin! At that time, the CCBC will co-host the IBBY Regional Children's & Young Adult Literature Conference sponsored by the U.S. Board on Books for Young People (USBBY).

The second annual Charlotte Zolotow Lecture will be given on Oct. 7 by Katherine Paterson in Madison immediately preceding the USBBY Conference. This lecture is free and open to the public.

Speakers who will develope the conference theme, "Points of View," include Patricia Aldana, Nina Bawden, Virginia Buckley & Katherine Paterson, Anthony Browne, Joanna Cole & Bruce Degen, Floyd Cooper, Lois Ehlert, Sarah Ellis, Jeffrey Garrett, Kevin Henkes, Nina Ignatowicz, Keiko Kasza, Hector Viveros Lee, Julius Lester, Naomi Shihab Nye, and Junko Yokota.
