Greetings.
There are some very special authors visiting Pooh Corner bookstore in Madison this spring, and I appreciate being able to mention them at the top of each month. I've received a lot of positive comments from many of you (sent personally and not broadcast to everyone, fortunately ;)) which re?firm that our commitment to attract quality writers and illustrators is worth while.
Ji-li Jiang, the author of Red Scarf Girl: A Memoir of the Cultural Revolution , is giving a slide presentation and talk about her childhood in China during the revolution. Red Scarf Girl is a very awakening account of Ji-li's 6th to 8th grade years as she was torn between her love for both country and family.
I recently interviewed Ji-li for a local newspaper, and would be happy to share this with anyone. I also want to mention that HarperCollins has an excellent teaching guide for this book, so if you are using this text with children, check out the guide.
Ji-li's visit is on Tuesday, March 16th, at 6:30 PM, at Pooh Corner West in Madison. (608) 23339.
On Sunday, March 21, Peter Sis is visiting Pooh Corner bookstore to give a slide presentation and discussion about his art and the making of
Tibet Through the Red Box . This two-time Caldecott Honor recipient is one of the people who, to me, define the artist in children's book creating. He has a remarkable way to make the art, the story, and the intended audience all work together. I recently read
Fire Truck (Greenwillow, 1998) to a crowd of fire-loving toddlers, and this book was a well received as any I could image. I look forward to his Trucks, Trucks, Trucks (Greenwillow, 1999).
Peter Sis will be at Pooh Corner bookstore on Sunday, March 21, at 12:30 PM.
As many of you also know, Peter Sis is also giving a talk "Drawn to America: Imagination, Culture & Artistic Freedom on Monday, March 22, at Madison's Elvehjem Museum of Art, at 7:00 PM.
Ordinarily I limit my author listing to the current month, but I would like to mention one special date for children's book enthusiasts to know about now.
On Saturday, April 24, Pooh Corner bookstore is hosting a Midwest Children's book Author Fair . 19 children's book creators are currently confirmed, coming from Chicago, northern Illinois, the Twin Cities, and all around Wisconsin. Lois Ehlert, Stephen Gammell, Arthur Geisert, Beth Peck, and Barbara Joosse are just a few of the folks participating in this exciting festival. For any librarian, teacher, or group that lives in the Midwest and likes to bring authors and illustrators into your classroom, here is your chance to meet 19 of them at once! Saturday, April 24, at Madison's Pooh Corner East. For a complete listing, feel free to contact me.
