Pete's a Pizza is a delight. One thing my students (grade 2) noticed, between giggles, was how the clothing of the parents matches the floor coverings at the book's end. This they found hilarious and this discovery made many of them search for other visual amusements in the book. I thought they might notice the use of upper case letters for the font, but they did not.
I love hearing my class giggle while I read a dear book like this. In an age when so many of them know so much about worldly things, a little book about family games brings my little students back to where I want them to be: little children. I love Steig and at the end of the year, many of my students choose Amos and Boris as one of their Top Ten Favorite books. The language is challenging and beautiful
('phosphorescent sea" is a phrase they love to say) and the story about true friends is comforting.
