It's time to turn our attention to the winner, honor books and highly commended books named by the Charlotte Zolotow Award Committee.

The Zolotow Award was established a little more than a year by the Cooperative Children's Book Center to acknowledge outstanding writing in a picture book for children from birth to age seven.

Because we have only a week to discuss the eight books acknowledged by this year's committee, let's begin by discussing the winner, Snow, by Uri Shulevitz, and the two honor books, John Willy and Freddy McGee, by Holly Meade, and Pete's a Pizza, by William Steig. We invite your comments on any or all three of these books.

The Zolotow committee is comprised of members of the Friends of the CCBC, INc., and includes librarians and teachers who share the books with children and bring that feedback to the committee deliberation process. All three of these books had a wonderful effect on the children with whom they were shared. Snow was almost hypnotizing as children were drawn into its world of magic. Shulevitz's superb pacing so perfectly echoes the arc of a snowstorm and the emotional arc of a child anticipating and then experiencing such a storm, fueled as much by his imagination as by actual events.

John Willy and Freddy McGee is another wonderfully paced book that blends delicious language with an outrageous turn of events , and children took great delight in the story.

Pete's a Pizza's warm-hearted playfulness was also a delight for children, who appreciated the humor and understated tone of Steig's wonderful text.

What are your thoughts on any or all of these three books? Who else has read them with children and can share their responses?

Megan
