Grimes' JAZMIN'S NOTEBOOK was on my short list for the Newbery as well. Not only did Grimes do a wonderful job incorporating Jazmin's poetry into the narrative, but Jazmin herself came across as an authentic voice--a real young girl of talent, a product of her decade, but also universal. The period was vividly realized through detail; the narrative flowed; and all the characters were credible. I was very disappointed it did not receive the recognition of Newbery Honor Book, and was glad the CSK Award Committee recognized its worth.

"That All May Read!"
My opinions are my own--the library wouldn't want them!
