Awards from The Children's Book Committee at Bank St. College

I'm happy to announce the following:

The Children's Book Committee at Bank Street College announced its annual awards at a ceremony on March 18, 1999. The 1998 Josette Frank Award goes to My Lousiana Sky by Kimberly Willis Holt, published by Holt and edited by Christy Ottaviano. The Award is given for a book of outstanding literary merit in which children or young people deal in a positive and realistic way with difficulties in their world and grow emotionally and morally.

The 1998 Flora Stieglitz Straus Award was given to Iqbal Masih and the Crusaders Against Child Slavery by Susan Kuklin, published by Holt and edited by Marc Aronson. This award is given for a nonfiction book that advances humanitarian ideals and serves as an inspiration to young readers.

The 1998 Claudia Lewis Award went to I, Too, Sing America: Three Centuries of African American Poetry by Catherine Clinton, with illustrations by Stephen Alcorn, published by Houghton Mifflin and edited by Margaret Raymo. The award is given for the best poetry book of the year for young readers.
