When we began the discussion of the two books brought to visibility through the ALA/ALSC Mildred L. Batchelder Award process, I realized we had scheduled only one week for these two books. I also realized that the comparative "invisibility" of translated books in general might mean that relatively few of you might have had a chance to read them at this point. We had discussed each of the books at length at the CCBC during the January CCBC Batchelder Discussion, but we had hoped that some of the other readers across the CCBC-Net community would step forward.

Gabi did just that. Thank you, Gabi! And so did the two U.S. editors of these fine books. Jill Davis "appeared," as it were, and then so did Susie Morgenstern. We located Cindy Kane through the prompt assistance of Susan Hawk at Penguin Putnam. We appreciate your messages because of what you said, not merely because you wrote.

We're delighted that another Cindy and Susan asked about the Prix Totem, because this widens our horizons even more. It also led to one more coincidence.

Artist/author Peter Sis is our guest at UW-Madison at this time. Last evening when he and I were at a dinner, Peter Sis responded to a question about his unique lapel pin, saying it relates to a French award he'd received for the book "The Three Golden Keys." You guessed it! He's one of the recipients of the Prix Totem! He was delighted to find out that someone in the USA has heard of this award. I'll make certain he knows that there are more than 1,000 someones who now know about it!

I expect some of you will write in response to the messages of the past several days whenever you have a chance to read them. Please do. And if you want more information about the Mildred L. Batchelder Award, and we hope you do, please visit the American Library Association website
(ala.org) where you'll find the Batchelder Award information along with other ALA/ALSC book award material.

On Tuesday, we'll turn our attention to the eight picture books honored through the 1999 CCBC Charlotte Zolotow Award, Honor Book and Commended Books process. The Charlotte Zolotow Award honors picture book writing. The honored books include the Zolotow Award Winner "Snow," by Uri Shulevitz (Farrar); the Honor Books "John Willy and Freddy McGee" by Holly Meade (Cavendish) and "Pete's a Pizza" by William Steig
(HarperCollins). They also include Highly Commended Books: "Mama Cat Has Three Kittens" by Denise Fleming (Henry Holt); "Circle Dogs" by Kevin Henkes (Greenwillow); "Dance" by Bill T. Jones and Susan Kuklin
(Hyperion); Little Clam by Lynn Reiser (Greenwillow); and "Elizabeti's Doll" by Stephanie Stuve-Bodeen (Lee & Low). Please get ready to think about the book "Snow." We have only one week to do this, so get ready!
