DOCTOR DESOTO is a model of great writing both in its language and its
structure. Steig is a master of *moving the plot forward.* Every
single sentence he writes advances the story. The structure of DOCTOR
DESOTO is classical -- the exposition (the mouse and his practice),
the rising action (the fox begging for help), the climax ("Let's risk
it"), the denouement ("Once I start a job I always finish it. My
father was the same way"), and the wonderful restoration to order --
and funny surprise -- at the end. It is a model of great writing.

I adore this book. And PETE'S A PIZZA is a classic. The Zolotow Award
is a wonderful addition to the recognition of writers for children.
