Thanks so much, Violet, for your responses to Angela Johnson's recent books, particularly to Heaven and to The Other Side. And thanks, Deborah, for clarifying who edited Johnson's books published during 1998.

Any other readers of Heaven and/or The Other Side want to comment? We'd love to hear from some of the other readers of Heaven. Step up!

Are we ever going to comment on The Skin I'm In by Sharon Flake? Yes! Right now! Please do...

The Skin I'm In was published by Jump at the Sun/Hyperion, the new imprint headed by Andrea Davis Pinkney. This novel is the first published book written by Sharon Flake, who - as a promising beginning author - has been named the recipient of the CSK John L. Steptoe Award. (That award was once named the Genesis Award and then the New Talent Award - but now the bureaucratic maze has ended and the name of the award for beginning authors and artists is settled.)

Breaking Ground/Breaking Silence by Joyce Hansen (Henry Holt) is a handsomely produced volume offering an amazing array of new information about some of the colonial settlers in what is now New York City because of the recent discovery of a colonial African burying ground there. Who can comment further about this unique book? ...Ginny
