I also noticed the folktale elements in "Holes," that reminded me of not only "Maniac Magee," but also "Wringer." I know it seems every time I post something (which hasn't been very often lately) I mention the Bloor book "Tangerine," but it, too, reminds me of "Holes."
My problem with the book is the same problem I had with "View From Saturday." It is just too darn seamless, too carefully constucted so that things aren't coincidences, but destiny. Maybe I'm just not a believer in destiny, and I'm not sure if Sachar is or not, either. I guess I was reading too fast, because I didn't realize Zero was the relative of whomever Stanley's grandfather didn't carry up the mountain, so I missed much of the significance of that part of the book. When I finally did get that part, it seemed like a little too much for me. I know most of you probably won't agree and will just say I should read more carefully.
