HOLES

A quick comment, because I'd rather listen to all of you:
Initially, HOLES reminded me of MANIAC MAGEE crossed with THE WESTING GAME -it has that "mythic" tone, and a wonderful puzzle of a plot where, at the end, all of the pieces fit together -- but at Midwinter the very perceptive Jane Botham compared it to Sid Fleischman's work. And of course she's right. It's a tall tale.
Is HOLES a book for boys or girls? Bluntly, who cares? All readers, male and female, appreciate strong characters and a good story (not to mention a good sense of humor along with the drama), and that HOLES has.
I would give it an 8. You can dance to it.
