Holes

Friends: Could it be that the idea that HOLES is a fantasy comes from the combination of larger than life characters and a setting that's just a mite exaggerated? Some of you residents of dustier climes might be thinking, "'Exaggerated'? That's my back yard!"--but you know what I mean. Also, isn't there a sense that nearly everything Stanley sees and does has some larger signficance? That's pretty comon in fantasy too, heroic fantasy, at least. Sachar has constructed his story so that it can be read as fantasy, or not, as the reader prefers. Can it be read as metaphor, as WOMAN IN THE WALL has to be? I dunno--if there's a metaphoric or symbolic level to HOLES, it's pretty far down.

Cheers,
