I was amazed at the maturity of the craft of writing which Louis Sachar has achieved in this wonderful novel. The weaving of character and plot from beginning to end is astounding. I did not find it "dark" even though I remember at the beginning of my reading I wondered if it might be. His humor rescues the plot and his craft keeps the reader engrossed in a fascinating adventure. The touch of fantasy is just enough not to overwhelm the credibility. I was delighted that it won and have found that my fifth grade boys love it! Sue McGown
