Monica,

I am replying off-line because I was very intrigued by something you said, but don't want to go off-topic at ccbc. You said the girls in your class are "more literal." Is this a particular batch of girls, or is it something that you've noticed about girls in your classes for years, or is something that studies have proven?
I understand that the given wisdom about stories is that if boys like them, girls will read them, but if girls like them, boys won't make the effort to read them. Please don't bristle--I'm not advocating this position; it's just something I've read. From your years with kids, does this "given wisdom" jive with what you've seen?
By the way, I know of two non-reader boys who just loved Holes. Haven't given it to any girls yet, so I don't know their reaction. And of course, this is just anecdotal evidence.
Very much appreciate your thoughts on this.
