This is, indeed, an unexpected plus. It is not, of course, one of the considerations of the award. I love having books like Snowflake Bentley, Officer Buckle, Rapunzel, and Smoky Night all on the shelf together because it attests to the diverse art in and uses of children's book. I think the "surprising" and controversial winners, and the variance in style from year to year will, over time, strengthen the award.
