Holes

On the list of fantasy elements in Holes, I would add the poisonous lizards. According to a biology professor friend of mine, only Gila monsters and beaded lizards are poisonous and they are much bigger than the lizards described by Sachar.

The unrealistic elements combined with the realistic elements is what made this book fun for me. My fifth grade son and I read this book together and he enjoyed discussing whether an event could really take place. I just enjoyed suspending my belief in reading this wonderful book as I would do when attending a wonderful play.
