I have 4 children--all sports players, 3 of whom went on to college sports and none of them read sports fiction as children. However, 3 of the 4 now read mainly non-fiction, especially biography. I think they got started by reading sports bios and as their interests expanded went on to other biographies and autobiographies.
At my library, I would say sports series are not popular but single titles that involve basketball in any form, even poetry are sure hits. Other sports titles enjoy some success, but basketball seems to be the sport of choice here. Maybe because basketball requires only 1 ball and a playground fancy equipment--and so everyone can feel like a player snd identify with the characters.
