Guts & Glory: Making It in the NBA" by Ken Rappoport is a better than average book about modern players. He looks at 10 current or recent stars who had to overcome great odds to make it. Only a couple are real big names, and it's interesting all the way through because the obstacles they all faced are so varied, including poverty
(Buck Williams), Tourette's Syndromw (Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf), auto accident (Bobby Hurley), and even "not as good at basketball as his sister" (Reggie Miller). Rappoport doesn't gush or exaggerate. He does point out how in some cases the obstacles were at least partially responsible for later success. He even cites his sources as a good biographer should...which also shows us that he at least interviewed all of the subjects himself for part of his information.
