This book was mentioned once before, but I love to use "Baseball Saved Us" by Ken Mochizuki with all ages up to about 4th grade. It is a book that can be read aloud and enjoyed on many different levels; as a
"small kid finally hits the ball" story for the pre-schoolers who get tired of everyone being bigger than they are, to a perfect discussion starter on World War II history for older children. I have also recommended it for middle schoolers with reading problems who need an
"issues" book but who cannot yet read longer books.

My patrons seem to be much like most of the others mentioned - Matt Christopher is the author of choice. However, I think the sports theme is incidental. Many, many, many children who come to the library love series books of all kinds. They love them and love them and love them!!! However, that is off topic...
