The Cooperative Children's Book Center is pleased to announce the winners of the 1999 Charlotte Zolotow Award for outstanding writing in a picture book for young children. This year's results are:
Winner: Uri Shulevitz for "Snow" (Farrar, Straus and Giroux, 1998)
Honor Books: 1) Holly Meade for "John Willy and Freddy McGee " (Marshall Cavendish, 1998) 2) William Steig for "Pete's a Pizza" (Michael di Capua / HarperCollins, 1998)
The committee also cited five books as highly commended titles:
1) Fleming, Denise. "Mama Cat Has Three Kittens" (Holt, 1998) 2) Henkes, Kevin. "Circle Dogs" Illustrated by Dan Yaccarino. (Greenwillow, 1998) 3) Jones, Bill T. "Dance" Photographs by Susan Kuklin. (Hyperion, 1998) 4) Reiser, Lynn. "Little Clam" (Greenwillow, 1998) 5) Stuve-Bodeen, Stephanie. "Elizabeti's Doll" Illustrated by Christy Hale. (Lee & Low, 1998).
The seven members of the 1999 Zolotow Award Committee all work directly with young children in public library, elementary school, and preschool settings, and all of them found many opportunities to share the books under consideration with children from birth through age 7 in order to see how children responded to the books. These varied experiences, in addition to literary and artistic merit, informed the group discussion as a whole.
