Has anyone mentioned the John Stadler books like Hooray for Snail and Snail Saves the Day? There's another one, I think, about Hippo. They have very few words and are funny. I've found that young children like them.
There are two easy readers that I can think of, one called Baseball Ballerina about a girl who prefers baseball to ballet, and an extremely simple book called Soccer Game! Neither are wonderful but they fill a need.
Do martial arts count? JoJo's Flying Sidekick by Pinkney is a picture book that kids like. There's also a picture book (o.p., I think) called Mermaid Janine about a girl taking swimming lessons.
For a totally different age group... Run for Your Life by Marilyn Levy is a novel for middle schoolers based on a true story about a girls' track team at a community center. It emphasizes the influence that becoming part of a team can have on other aspects of a teenager's life.
