Here at our library Swish! by Bill Martin, published by H. Holt in 1997 is a very popular picture book as well as Matzah Ball by Mindy Portnoy, published by our local publisher Kar?n in Rockville MD in 1994. The first is the story of an intense basketball game between two girls' teams with lively words and art; and the second book is a wonderful story about a young boy's trip to an Orioles game at Camden Yards. A third book that is popular is the Grandmas at Bat by Emily McCully, a HarperCollins.
(Maybe that's because we have so many grandparents here who like to read to their grandchildren when they visit and come in to checkout books for their grandchildren. Both generations enjoy the humor of the story and drawings!) All three of these books are for the younger age group.
The middle schoolers like Lensey Namioka's Yang the Younger and his Terrible Ear, and some families here have read it as a family read-a-loud book. We hope you enjoy these suggestions for the younger readers.
