Writing About Sports

I was the visiting author today at a K-5 elementary school, talking about where we get ideas and how they grow into stories. One fifth grade boy said he got his ideas while playing sports. After the children wrote in the journals that I provided (mini spiral notebooks that I decorated with stickers--including soccer players and basketballs along with aliens and stars), that same boy read his journal entry out loud to the group. Guess what: he wrote about his love of football. He used so much detail, I was reminded of Jerry Spinelli's CRASH. Who said jocks can't read or write! I thought you would all enjoy hearing about this student. There is definitely an audience out there for sports books.
