I'd like to thank Tom Hurlburt of LaCrosse Public Library for sharing his expertise on sports books with us the past few weeks. Tom, I hope you'll continue to share your insights with us throughout the rest of the month. You may even have some questions of your own for our next guest on the subject of sports books.

At this time I'd like to introduce our second guest of the month who has a different type of expertise when it comes to sports books. Author Sue Macy has generously agreed to respond to any questions or comments you may have on her two books for young readers: "A Whole New Ball Game: The Story of the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League" (Holt, 1993) and "Winning Ways: A Photohistory of American Women in Sports."

Both of these books are good examples of outstanding nonfiction for young readers. I appreciate the amount of careful research Sue did for each book; I was especially impressed with the primary research she did for "A Whole New Ball Game," for which she tracked down and interviewed many former players.

Sue, to start off our discussion, I'm wondering how you chose the topics for your first two books and what were the first steps you took in your research?
