SPORTS FICTION

My sports-minded sons enjoyed Lipsyte's Contender and his sequels more because of the theme (of trying hard even though you may not ever be the best in your sport), rather than the sport of boxing. Lipsyte is a sports writer and I think they also liked his writing style as well. Otherwise, my sons are basically nonfiction/biography readers. They would always read SI for Kids cover to cover. Now on the other hand, MY favorite read this season is Bloor's Tangerine, which has soccer and football in the background. I feel this book is a page-turner that fifth graders or middle schoolers will enjoy because of the mystery surrounding the character Erik's poor eyesight. His relationship with his older brother is strained and his parents seem to be holding something back. I think this will catch the interest of both sports fans and those who are not--it surely kept me reading until the end!
