sports books

I agree that the Easy Readers, especially the Step into Reading series offer a variety of sports stories for younger children. However, where I get stumped is when the Olympics come around. I can find books with the theme of baseball or soccer or maybe running but skiing? gymnastics? bob-sledding? Archery? Picture books just don't seem to be written on the types of sporting events highlighted during the Olympics. I can find non-fiction sports books or even biographies on the Olympic contenders for older readers but I dread the first and second grade teachers coming in wanting a picture book to spark their Olympic discussion.

On another tangent, a sports book that gets attention during this time of year
(science experiment time) is "Science and Sports" by Robert Gardner. It's all about the science and math involved in different sports, like how a fielder judges fly balls or a discussion of momentum in terms of a stationary defensive back trying to tackle a fullback running directly at him. Really a neat book to get kids interested in science or math or to show them how these subjects relate to the real world.
